Mutual home ownership
Mutual home ownership is a way that a group of people can share the equity of a property using a co-operative.
Put simply, a group of people pool their resources and over time, purchase a number of properties that they jointly invest in. At any point a person can leave the development and sell their right to occupy to another person on the open market or, if the co-operative wishes, sell it back to the co-operative. The level in which a person can invest in the co-operative is capped to ensure the co-operative has sufficient resources to manage its affairs.
bchs is actively working to develop a model of mutual home ownership. If you are interested in mutual home ownership or community land trusts and wish to discuss our work in this area further, please email Carl Taylor at carlt@bchs.org.uk or call 0121 764 3808.
